The Other Railway is also known as British Railways. Before that title came up, The Other Railway was meant that locomotives travelled to the Island of Sodor and across the United Kingdom under four railway companies: the London Midland and Scottish Railway, London and North Eastern Railway, Great Western Railway and the Southern Railway. Before 1948, The Other Railway created the visions of how Sodor should look like in the first two books of both The Three Railway Engines and Thomas the Tank Engine that were published in 1945 and 1946.
At that time, The Other Railway was under the leadership of Sir Topham Hatt. In the early years of both 1945 to 1946, engines such as Edward, Henry, Gordon, Thomas, James, The Red Engine plus 98462 and 87546 were transferred to the NWR. The last two engines were sent home for being rude and nasty while the six remaining characters stayed on to be Really Useful Engines. When The Red Engine left, Percy came to Sodor in 1950 as the first locomotive under BR rule to bring The Fat Controller a new engine to work on his railway.
Sometimes in the books such as Enterprising Engines, The Other Railway is often mentioned at most times believing that this railway on the mainland should be known by that rather than itself as British Railways according to Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopher. Many scandals involved The Other Railway to breach its act and bring the British Prime Minister into denying or consult with them over the scandal. One of these examples was the infamous Great Train Robbery that Harold MacMillan tried to starve off D4711's arrival as British Prime Minister in 1963. The railway also answered Sir Topham Hatt's question that scrap is a threat to his locomotives on their behalf in 1968.
