Sir Haydn is based on the third locomotive of the Skarloey Railway, Sir Handel. He was built in 1878 by the Hughes' Loco and Tramway Engine Works Ltd. of Loughborough as a 0-4-0ST (now a 0-4-2ST).

Corris to TalyllynEdit

The nearby Corris Railway is where Sir Haydn worked there until its closure in 1948, the year that British Railways is first introduced as part of nationalisation. To make it look like Sir Handel from the Sodor Aluminum Company to the Skarloey Railway, Sir Haydn was loaned to the Talyllyn Railway with a surviving member, Edward Thomas who was portrayed in the Railway Series as Peter Sam and the number three locomotive was named after Sir Henry Haydn Jones who was the late owner of the Corris Railway. He re-entered service in 1968 after a seven year absence due to firebox problems for Sir Haydn.
