The North Western Railway (abbreviated NWR) is the Fat Controller's Railway formed in 1914 from the Tidmouth, Knapford and Elsbridge Light Railway, the Sodor and Mainland Railway and the Wellsworth and Suddery Railway by a government-funded proposal to have Sodor's standard gauge railways join up. This was made by British Prime Minister, Herbert Asquith when the First World War began that same year (1914). In 1948, the railway became the North Western Region of British Railways, but the term was never used as the railway kept its operating independence.

After this under Clement Attlee in the late 1940s, Privatisation came in the early 1990s and the railway became under the title of the NWR during the leadership of British Prime Minister, John Major. The railway's motto is "There's nothing quite like it" in English, but from Latin was "Nil unquam simile".
